  Proposal for an interactive installation in public space. ^
  The purpose of the following proposal in the - NeuVé*- concept expresses the thought of triggering communication and exchange on any level and is active in public space.  
  Interaction ^
  Offering basic visual elements in the format of an installation / environment, we want to aim at interaction with the public anywhere. The use of elementary forms will be the main source of the environment. The imaging of the environment will grow over the period of presentation by the use of digital and real material (both visually connected) and by the hand of the public. Driven by the experience that the language of image triggers communication the public is invited to join, play, arrange or compose in the environment by using the offered material. Compiled sound will be part of the atmosphere in the environment.

  This description will be part of the digital program as an animation presenting the concept and attracting people    
  Material ^
  The offered material consists of elementary forms. The forms are present in a digital application as well as real in the physical space (realized in Perspex or some representative local material).
The public, seduced to interact the arrangement of the imagination, will start on different levels: by movements with the mouse - composing on the screen(s), by playing with physical shapes in the space, by outlining the shapes on freestanding (transparent) walls/sheets, by sticking shapes on these walls, by printing the shapes and hanging them (example: drawn by hand, transparent sheets, sticker paper etc.). According to local availability other materials might be introduced.
 
  Imagination ^
  During the process people can immerse themselves in pattern making according to the nature of growth and development. As nature has design actions like composing, compiling and arranging will appear; proximity (how elements tend to be grouped together depending on their closeness), similarity (how items that are similar in some way tend to be grouped together), closure (how items are grouped together if they tend to complete a pattern) and simplicity (how items are organized into figures according to symmetry, regularity, and smoothness) are parts of this process.
Once started people will react on each others work, they create their own experience in a visual way.
 
  Exchange in comparison ^
  Aware that the basic forms fit in any culture and context it activates a cross-cultural exchange figuring out differences in composing and arranging in a specific culture. Generally spoken we, as experience designers, are providing the conditions to have the imagination going; after having put up the conditions (= the installation / environment) we leave the 'action space' and remain as actors too (maybe by times as assistants or advisors) to watch and document the work proceeding.
 
  What does this mean practically and logistically ? ^
  An existing space needs to be prepared or when not available an intimate open transparent environment has to be built especially. This space can be inside or outside and is generally open to the public.
Public screen: a big projection screen needs to be installed on which the computer program is shown (by beamer). It is faced to the public space so the interaction of people with the program is visible on a large scale.
(How to deal with the digital equipment should be logistically considered in the practical organization and has of course influence on the final construction of the environment.)

In the transparent 'sensitive' space people can experience themselves in relation to a (the) world surrounding them, at the beginning the space is only filled in limited, during the process this will be continued by adding more elementary forms.

Phases of the process will be documented and shown on the Internet and as screensaver. When the program is not touched for a while, this will then be shown on the public screen. This visualization will seduce people, who are passing by, to join the interaction.

Publicity about this interactive installation is done primarily according to local customs. Our proposal would be: an article in the newspaper in advance as a kind of advertisement, also broadcast by local television and radio, another possibility are leaflets distributed to put the attention towards this event.

  The actors ^
  Nikhil Bhardwaj (National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, specialized in exhibition design) & Leidi Haaijer (a highly experienced multi media artist) have formed a partnership on interactivity; finding many correspondences in their work on interactive design, digital programming and applied arts.

Nikhil Bhardwaj (India), claiming that interactivity not only exists in digital media, but can be found in all forms of expression, is exploring these issues in his work. At present he is also working as a team member on Khalsa Heritage museum project as an exhibition designer.

Leidi Haaijer (Holland) is fascinated by structures and patterns. She has previously developed many interactive CD-ROM programs. As an example, the "Pliable Product - Plooibaar Product - Formowalny Produkt" is a tool, a creative model to bring to the user an understanding of visual composition, and construction. Leidi Haaijer is also web designer for a Dutch Educational television, and works on designs for architectural spaces in Holland.

On site the designers will cooperate with local specialists to create a logistic network, the first step towards interaction.

 
  List of equipment and material needed  
 
  • Equipment to project a computer program on large scale in public space
  • 1 - 4 transparent walls (glass or perspex).
  • 1 - 4 solid walls (flat smooth surface to be covered by schoolboardpaint).
  • At least 2 multimedia computersystems (standalones) + printers (details on the systems will be specified in due time).
  • Some detailed material: physical shapes, transparent sheets, stickersheets, reproduced stickers,
    materials for fastening, etc.
  • Speakers for sound support in the environment.
